October Landscapes

Sunlight shining on mature deciduous trees in a valley in the Boggeragh Mountains in North Cork.

The autumnal feelings have taken over my heart by the end of the month. The mornings are frosty and sunny at the same time, the evenings are damp and smokey. The nights are freezing cold and the skies are filled with stars as far as the eye can see.

It's time to get snuggly with the dogs by the fire while the stew or soup cooks away on the stove. I'm even baking cakes more often. The lack of daylight in the evenings makes me restless after running up and down ladders all summer long. I find it takes some time to get used to the seasonal changes. It is time to slow down again, which I find harder than being everywhere at once.

This month we've been seeing a hen harrier around our garden, he comes back every so often. Once he got chased away by two crows. I tried to get some photographs of him, but he just looks like any old bird sitting in a tree.

The raspberry bushes are slowly taking over the garden. Finally this year they produced bucket loads of fruit. They shrubs were covered in pink blobs even at the end of October. I don't manage them very well though and the fruit is hard to get to. And on top of that raspberries are like roses, they don't like you anywhere near them.
